Control customized to your customer

The water temperature changes in function with the outside temperature so that your customer can enjoy a stable level of heating at any time. As the installer, you set up the system according to the desires of your customer. You input four temperatures to determine the “heating curve” and in doing so, you perfectly tune the Daikin Altherma system to the type of home.

Automatic re-start after power interruption

In the event of a power interruption of up to two hours, the system automatically resumes with the previously set parameters.

Quiet operation

The outdoor unit makes hardly any noise thereby leaving your customer’s (and the neighbor’s) peace and quiet undisturbed. You can even set the outdoor unit to produce 10dB(A) less noise during the night.

Electric back-up heating

Every Daikin Altherma system is equipped with a backup heater (heating capacity of 3 or 6 kW). This unit can be used for supplemental heating during extremely cold outdoor temperatures or as a back-up in case of any problems with the outdoor unit. Your customer can then enjoy comfortable heating at any moment. The operation of the back-up heater can be coupled to the outside temperature. The back-up heater will then only operate when outside temperatures are extremely low.

Weather-dependent setpoint (outdoor reset)

When the weather-dependent setpoint functionality is enabled, the setpoint for the leaving water temperature will be dependent upon the outside ambient temperature. At low outside ambient temperatures, the leaving water temperature increases to satisfy the increasing heating requirement of the building. At warmer temperatures, the leaving water temperature decreases to save energy.

The weather dependent setpoint or sometimes called outdoor reset is when Daikin Altherma control senses outside temperature and readjusts the heating system water to a minimum water temperature to satisfy the heat loss of the home. This accomplishes two major things: one it will save energy and second it creates more comfort by eliminating short cycling of Daikin Altherma at mild outdoor temperatures. During weather dependent operation, the user has the option to shift up or down the target water temperature by a maximum of 9°F (5°C).

The floating setpoint ensures the heat emitter temperature is never higher than necessary and this leads to the highest possible comfort level. A heat pump requires more energy input the higher the water temperature, meaning the floating setpoint also ensures the lowest possible energy consumption.

 Daikin Altherma uses a natural source of energy. The outdoor unit extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it inside through refrigerant piping to supply heating. The compact outdoor unit is easily installed and, as no drilling or excavation work is required, it can also be installed in condos and apartments.

1B / Hydrobox: the Heart of the Daikin Altherma System
 The hydrobox heats the water that circulates through low temperature radiators, floor heating systems or fan coil units and also provides domestic hot water. If you opt for the combination of heating and cooling, then the hydrobox can also reverse the cycle to provide lower water temperatures and thus cooling to the home.

2 / Domestic Hot Water Tank for low energy consumption
 As for your domestic hot water, Daikin Altherma is just as clever. The unique lay-out and special placement of the system components maximize energy efficiency. The water inside the storage tank is primarily warmed up by thermal energy from the outside air, thanks to a heat exchanger connected to the heat pump. However, an additional electrical heating element in the domestic water tank can take care of extra heat required in the shower, tub or sink. At necessary intervals the water is automatically heated to 158°F or more to prevent the risk of bacteria growth. With Daikin Altherma, delightfully warm and perfectly safe water can be enjoyed at all times. Depending on the daily consumption of hot water, Daikin Altherma domestic hot water tanks are available in two different sizes.

4 / Solar kit
 The solar kit provides the transfer of solar heat to the Daikin Altherma hot water tank via an external heat exchanger. In contrast to tanks with two heat exchangers, this system allows the entire content of the tank to be efficiently heated with solar heat and, if necessary, with heat pump energy.

The large LCD screen on the room thermostat indicates all the necessary information regarding the setting of the Daikin Altherma system in a blink of an eye. The user can also easily navigate between the different menus whose most common functions and modes include:

The scroll-compressors provided are designed as a compact, robust, low-noise device to guarantee optimal operational reliability (no valves and built-in swing-link coupling) and efficiency (through a low initial flow and a constant compression ratio) demand. Therefore, the system seldom operates at full capacity and your customer only pays for the energy which they actually need.

Heat exchanger anti-corrosion treatment as standard, the heat exchanger in the outdoor unit is provided with an anti-corrosion treatment. This treatment guarantees and noticeably increases the resistance against acid rain and salt corrosion.

Super performance thanks to the inverter principle
The coefficient of performance (COP) of the Daikin Altherma heat pump is also largely attributable to the Daikin inverter principle. An integrated frequency converter adjusts the rotational speed of the compressor to suit the heating.

Heating and Cooling

If you choose Daikin Altherma with an indoor unit EKHBX, it can not only heat the house, but also cool it. The heat pump is then equipped with a reversible 4-way valve, whereby the refrigeration cycle is reversed and heat is removed from the rooms. The indoor unit can cool rooms via under floor cooling or fan coil units.

Set temperature limits

To prevent incorrect manual adjustments, temperature limits can be implemented for both cooling and heating. With under floor heating, for example, it is important that the temperature of the water is controlled to the type of floor element. To prevent condensation problems, the temperature for floor cooling can never be lower than 64.4°F. For fan coil units, the water temperature can be allowed to decrease to 41°F.

The compact outdoor unit is easily installed and, as no drilling or excavation work is required, it can also be installed in condos and apartments. The monobloc outdoor unit version combines both the condensing unit and the hydrobox, simplifying installation while retaining all the benefits of the original design. Since the entire refrigeration circuit is contained in the outdoor unit, no refrigerant piping needs to be installed and special handling of refrigerant circuits is no longer required. As a result, Daikin Altherma Monobloc Type can be installed by any Daikin trained heating specialist. Installation time is also reduced, resulting in lower installation costs across the board.

Freeze protection of hydronic parts
In order to protect the water pipes from freezing up during winter, insulation is provided for all hydronic components and special software has been applied to activate the pump and back-up heater if necessary. This prevents the water temperature from dropping below freezing point and can minimize the need for the addition of glycol to the water pipes.

Built-in electric back-up heater
for additional heating during extremely cold outdoor temperatures. The Daikin Altherma Monobloc is standard equipped with a 6 kW back-up heater, which can be adjusted to 3 kW. If necessary, an “in line” back-up heater of 6 kW can be mounted indoors (also adjustable to 3 kW or 3.5 kW).

 

 

Daikin Altherma is an Electrically Driven Air to Water Heat Pump system designed to provide space heating (via under floor, low temperature radiators or fan coil units), domestic or sanitary hot water and space cooling. It combines heat pump hot water system for domestic use with space heating and cooling.

The air-source to water heat pump system is designed to replace conventional fossil fuel boilers (gas/propane/oil/direct electric). Unlike the typical heat pump system on the current market which is limited in application by the low-ambient temperature, Daikin Altherma efficiently extracts low-level heat from the ambient air and raises it to temperatures capable of comfortably heating a house and providing domestic hot water in outdoor temperatures down to -4º F. In doing so, Daikin Altherma makes use of renewable aero-thermal energy.

The variable speed technology based heat pump technology employed is highly efficient (3 to 5 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed. The product was recently awarded the European Eco-label (2009) being recognized as a renewable energy solution.

The Daikin Altherma system has the following characteristics and applications:

  • Daikin Altherma can be installed as a two-unit split system consisting of an outdoor compressor unit and an indoor unit or "Hydrobox" containing the hydronic parts. Alternatively, the system can be installed as a monobloc system with a single outdoor unit combining the compressor and hydronic parts.
  • The split system includes R-410A refrigerant piping between the outdoor unit and the hydrobox, and water piping between the indoor unit and the indoor heating appliances/tank. The Monobloc Type includes water piping between the outdoor unit and the heat emitters / domestic hot water tank.
  • The Daikin Altherma system heat pump compressor incorporates inverter technology, with an integrated frequency-converter that adjusts the rotational speed of the compressor to meet the heating or cooling demand. Therefore, the system seldom operates at full capacity.
  • The domestic hot water tank includes a supplemental electrical heating element to boost the domestic hot water temperature if necessary.
  • The Daikin Altherma system also can be tied into a solar thermal collector system that supports the production of domestic hot water.
  • The Hydrobox for the split system and contained in the outdoor unit in the Monobloc Type both include a built-in electric back-up heater to provide additional heating during extremely cold weather.

Daikin Altherma may be used in 4 different configurations:

  • Monovalent: Daikin Altherma is the only source of heat for the entire house and domestic hot water production. This configuration would generally be used in mild climates, where winter temperature would not fall under -4ºF on a consistent basis.
  • Monoenergetic: a backup electric heater is used to supplement the heat pump operation on the coldest days of the year.
  • Covalent: Utilization of heat pump with combination of the optional second heat source (electric, oil or gas boiler) for Mid-ultra cold climate heating days.
  • Bivalent: The Daikin Altherma heat pump is configured so an external boiler can be used for the coldest months. This is ideal in Northern territories where temperatures in winter fall drastically. This system is the best solution in terms of investment, operating cost and environmental conservation.

The Daikin Altherma technology delivers excellent efficiency due to the heat pump characteristics (using renewable energy from the outside air) and the part load benefits of the inverter compressor technology, using only the electrical energy needed to satisfy the requirements of the home.

Currently there is no appropriate U.S. recognized testing and rating standard for technology that is of Air to Water design and can solve Hydronic Heating, Domestic Hot Water and Cooling requirements in a single packaged solution. As such, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued Daikin with Waivers (Case number: CAC-024, as published from page no. 34,731 in the DOE Federal Register on June 18th, 2010, and Case number CAC-028 as published from page no. 11,438 in the DOE Federal Register on March 2nd, 2011) and assigned an "Alternate Test Procedure" detailing testing requirements to establish full load COP and EER values.
